Samuel W. Rowley

Samuel W. Rowley was born on May 26, 1873, at Kentland, Ind., the son of Frank L. and Jane Rowley.

In 1884 he moved to Minnesota where he resided until 1892, when he came to Mitchell [South Dakota].

On October 3, 1894, he was united in marriage to Miss Madora Thomas in Perry township, Davison county, and to this union was born four children. Mrs. Rowley and two of the children have preceded him in death.

Mr. Rowley had been a member of the Odd Fellows lodge for the past 36 years. In 1915, he was grand master for South Dakota and at the time of his death he was secretary of the Chanka Lodge No. 21, Mitchell Encampment No. 9, and Canton Success No. 30.

On May 8, Mr. Rowley suffered a stroke and was taken to a Mitchell hospital where he died May 24, 1941.

He is survived by two children, Mrs. Hazel Helen Cox and Claude Alfred Rowley, both of Mitchell, two brothers, Emerson Rowley of Mitchell and Jairus E. Rowley of Artesian and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held May 26, at the Baptist church with the Rev. E. I. Jackson officiating. Burial was made in Graceland cemetery with the Broadbent funeral in charge. Services at the grave were in charge of the Odd Fellows. Music at the service was furnished by Mrs. E. A. Loomer accompanied by Mrs. Lloyd Scoville.

Honorary pall bearers were A. J. Curtis, J. M. Miller, Gus Erdman, Herman Morre, Art Gardner and Steve Spink. Active bearers were W. H. Snow, Charles Swift, Clarence Wallace, Frank James, Kenneth DeLapp and Roy Bates.

Out-of-town Odd Fellows attending the funeral services were W. J. Rowland, Gary; Fred Carpenter, Jr., C. E. Mundt, R. H. Barrey, Money Parson, Mites E. Peck, Jose Swart, W. Maier, G. Kosier, O. J. Gillespie, all of Sioux Falls; L. L. Trotter, L. L. Lathrop, Charles Demlo, Huron; F. L. Benson, Fulton; W. A. Bauman, Vermillion; A. Poole, Dr. F. Cook, M. Chenoweth, Wagner; C. E. Gibson, Salem, J. W. Stout, Stickney; Bob VandenBirge, Corsica and Lars Bance of Yanktown.
