ELWOOD M ROWLEYCUMBERLAND-- Elwood Mitchell Rowley, 87, of Uhl Highway SE, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at his home.Born Jan. 27, 1913, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late James R. and Isa (Mitchell) Rowley. Mr. Rowley was preceded in death by two daughters, JoAnn Rowley and Barbara Rowley; two brothers, Randall and William Rowley; three sisters, Gertrude Collins, Helen Robison and Irma Cooper. Mr. Rowley was a master mechanic and welder for the Local #37 Construction Union. He was a U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps veteran of WW II. He served in the Panamanian Revolution. He attended Pennsylvania Avenue School. He was a former boxer and was the golden glove champion in Cumberland. He was a business agent for the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local #489 from 1949-1955. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #37 for 46 years and a 32nd degree Mason, the Scottish Rite, Eastgate Lodge #216 A.F. & A.M., Ali Ghan Shrine and member of the Provost Guard Unit. He also was a member of the Davis Memorial United Methodist Church for 59 years. At the church, he was a former member of the board of trustees and he also served on the building and cemetery committees. He was a life member of the American Legion Fort Cumberland Post #13. Surviving are his wife, Emma M. (Testa) Rowley; eight children, E. Robert Rowley and wife Priscilla, Raleigh, N.C., Lillian Jacobs and husband J. Thomas, Frostburg, Raymond Rowley, Linda Snoots and husband Stephen, Debbie Slider and husband William, Patricia Hatter and husband Michael, Darlene Lee, Mark Rowley and wife Marilyn, all of Cumberland; 25 grandchildren, Katherine Rowley, Andrew Rowley, Jared Jacobs, Todd Rowley and wife Maureen, Joelle Rowley, Kimberly Rowley, Michelle Hast and husband Mike, Scott Zegles and wife Michelle, Tracy Stumbaugh and husband Scott, Stephen Snoots and wife Carla, Jonathan Snoots, Nicole Stratton and husband Kevin, Robert Dettinburn, Billy Slider, Kasey Slider, Isa Harden, Brandon Harden, Katherine Petit, Mick Hatter, Trinity Rowley and wife Tara, Grant Lee, Ben Lee, Marcus Rowley, Blake Rowley and Chance Rowley; 14 great-grandchildren and one expected. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a Masonic service Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Theodore D. Higby officiating and the Rev. William Bice assisting. Interment will be in the Davis Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be given to the Hospice Services of Western Maryland Health System, 900 Seton Drive, 3 North Office, Cumberland, MD 21502 or Davis Memorial Church, 14300 Highway, Cumberland, MD 21502 in memory of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Greatest thanks and appreciation be given to the Hospice Home Care Association of Western Maryland Health Systems and LaVale Lions Club for their excellent care and assistance. |
