RowleyBeloved Teacher Passes Away After Long Illness-- Fine Musician and Woman of High Attainments At her home, 1139 Park Avenue, yesterday morning, died Edith Adella Rowley, after a long illness. Miss Rowley had been subjected to attacks of heart since about three weeks ago and since that time she had been confined to her bed. Yesterday morning she passed quietly away Miss Rowley was born in this city and was the daughter of Warren C. and Julia Waite Rowley. She was educated in Mrs. Platt's school, entering as a pupil in the primary department, and continuing until she received her certificate of graduation. Later she was a pupil in the first Kindergarten Training School established in this city, and she had bee teaching in the kindergartens of the public schools for nearly a score of years. She taught first in Miller Street School, later in Wetmore and for the past five years, she had been teaching in Mandeville School. She was very efficient as a teacher and was well liked not only by the pupils, but by her associate teachers. She was a quiet but very conscientious and faithful worker, teaching by example as well as by concept and the children all loved her. The last day she was in school she conducted a mothers' meeting which was very successful. Miss Rowley was a fine musician and a graduate in piano music of the Utica Conservatory of Music. For a time she had taught piano in the conservatory. She was a member of the B Sharp Musical Club. She was a well read and very intelligent young woman, well versed in history and current events. She had visited many of the places at which the war was afterward fought. Miss Rowley was a member of the Oneida Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and of the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants. Her interest in the church and in church work was one of the strong points of her character. She had been a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church for many years, and was also a member of its missionary society and the Plymouth Club. She was one of the most active and efficient workers in the Sunday school and had for 15 years served as superintendent of its primary department. She will be greatly missed here and her place will be hard to fill. She was a woman of high attainments and fine character, beloved by all who knew her. She is survived by her parents and one brother, Henry W. Rowley of New York. |
