DEATHSMERAUX, ALICE MAERUTH WACHENHEIM RUDD Age 99, she died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at The Landmark of Baton Rouge. She was born Dec. 8, 1901. A native of Beka Plantation in Orleans Parish and Meraux in St. Bernard Parish, she was chief executive officer of Lloyd Furniture and a charter member and a founder of Greater Baton Rouge Retail Furniture Dealers Association, having a 40-year involvement in the furniture business before she sold her store in the 1960s and retired. She was also a pioneer in the state Department of Labor. She was the last surviving member of the nine Meraux children. Her seven sisters were Antionette (Mrs. Wallace Wilson), Beatrice (wife of state Sen. Louis H. "Jack" Folse), Clara (Mrs. Robley Bernard), Felonise (Mrs. George Perez), Juanita (Mrs. Hollis Ferree) and Lucille (Mrs. Walter Rowley); a sister, Rita, and brother Leon Jr. died in infancy. Her parents were Leon Anthony and Anita Michel Meraux. Her grandparents came to Louisiana from Bordeaux and Paris, France, in the 1840s. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Adam Nicholas Ruth, Archie Leon Wachenheim and Robert Rudd. She attended Holy Angels School in New Orleans, Esplanade High School for Girls, Tulane University and was a graduate of Soule Business College in New Orleans. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, downtown, at 825 Government St.; the Rev. Donald Blanchard will officiate. Religious services following at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Smith, Sister Maria Rabalais and Sister Judith Brun. She is survived by a son and his wife, Gerard Adam Ruth and Selma Ruth, and their children, Marsha Morgan and Larry Ruth of Baton Rouge, G. Andrew Ruth of New York City and Amy Ruth Hartwig of Philadelphia; and six great-grandchildren. Also survived by children of the late Mae Alice Ruth Torre Hodge, Gordon Thomas Torre of Laurel, Miss., Geraldine Jewell and JoAnn Kettlewell of Atlanta, Greg Torre of Little Rock, Ark., and Elaine Torre of Dallas; and 11 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Dr. Joseph P. "Blackie" Roumain, W.E. "Cotton" Lloyd Jr., Jerry Piper, Saul Fried, Gordon Thomas Torre and N.C. "Creed" Ritchie. Honorary pallbearers are Gene Ponti, J. Doug Grand and Archie Kranske. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, One St. Jude Place Building, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 300, Memphis, TN 38148-0552. |
