Cherry County, Nebraska

Historical Sketches

Early History Of Cherry County, Nebraska
N.S. Within a few years (of the original settlement of Kennedy Precinct, NE in 1893), the following also arrived and settled in this community: .. N. S. Rowley, ..

The following well known citizens of the County worked as cowboys during the open range days: John Enlow, Ed T. Ross, N. S. Rowley, Bill Erickson, Ed Richards, J. H. Quigley, Dan Adamson, Pete Rousch, Charles Larsen, Harper Cleveland, Larkin Cleveland, Charles Sherman, Charles Strickland, R. F. Gillespie and L. J. Jaeger, also known as Billie the Bear. All of these men, with the exception of Charles Sherman and L. J. Jaeger took up homesteads and engaged in the livestock business, establishing ranches of their own.

In 1904 the Stockmen's Telephone Co., built a high line from Valentine to Kennedy, on to Brownlee and the Rowley and Bachelor ranches, west of Kennedy, and this gave the community splendid telephone service.

Pioneers and others who took an active interest in this work (re: organizing the Cherry County Historical Society in 1928) were: .. N. S. Rowley, ..

Mrs Jennie Before hospitals were built and before we had registered nurses, automobiles and well travelled roads to the towns and villages, each community cared for its own sick. There were women in each community who were endowed by nature or training, or both, who stood ready to go to the home of a neighbor and render aid when sickness came. These noble women travelled by wagon, sled, buggy and sometimes by horseback, in storm, or shine, by day or night. They went with no thought of making a charge for their services; their only thought was to bring relief in time of need. Many lives were saved through their kind ministry. These outstanding women deserve to have their names engraved on the pages of our history, and we give you their names herewith: .. Mrs. Jennie Rowley, ..
F. M. The years of 1883, 1884, and 1885 were years of rapid settlement in the Sparks community. Early settlers included .. F. M. Rowley and five sons and one daughter..
